Living Room in Your Town
JUN KITAZAWA OFFICE YAKUMO
An open-to-public living room was planned at a corner of a town. First, inside an empty store, a carpet was unrolled. Then, participants visited nearby houses, to ask for unwanted furniture and housewares.
Collected items were then placed on the carpet, to make the space look like a real living room, one that could be found in any house in the community. This living room also functioned as a place for local residents to barter; they brought items from their own living room and bartered for something from this living room.
As more and more items were set in this open living room, people found it comfortable to spend time there. Some sat on the sofa, read books, while others watched TV or cooked.
As the interior of the living room kept changing, through barter, the activities in the living room unexpectedly changed as well.
